Six G is the position used for welding tests. Sometimes they’d make you put it in the top corner of a cage, to test your ability to weld in a limited access situation. But most position welding is done in a limited access situation.
The first main difference is that the AWS D1.1 4G welding certification certifies you to do fillet welds in the 1F, 2F, 4F, positions, and groove welds in the 1G, 2G, 4G,
Anyway, when you are hired in as a welder, they expect you to do everything. The only place I had to take every test was at Ingles’ ship yard. I spent over a week in the test lab.
There are really only 3 positions: vertical, horizontal, and flat. Overhead is the same as flat. Once you get that in your head, overhead is much easier.
Just remember, the rod doesn’t weld, you do. Put the metal where you want it. And, the metal will flow to the hottest part of the weld–the center, so don’t stay in the center or your weld will be lumpy.
Use a brazing tip to bring the metal to 1400 degrees.
Metal looses its ability to stay together at 2700%.

tinning then brazing cast iron
Set your machine like this. Start out cold and gradually increase your heat until you can stick the rod into the puddle and it doesn’t go out. That’s a perfect heat for all positions. For 1/8 7018 that’s about 117 on the dial. I usually use a 1/8 6010 to set the machine.

The 6G certifies you for everything. B 31-3 code. And they usually pay you more (if you pass).
In Canada , since 2014, everyone will be certified , all on the same level .
I found out about this, after I completed the level C 28 week program

Now, they will not give out C , B or A tickets in British Columbia
